Molecular markers for ornamental plant genetics, genomics and breeding

Abstract

Since the advent of molecular marker techniques they have been applied to problems of ornamental plant taxonomy, genetics and in a few cases breeding. Examples for useful applications for ornamental genetics have been: 1. studies on the genetic relatedness of genotypes; 2. supporting genetic analysis of traits of interest; 3. Mapping genes for horticultural traits onto chromosome maps; 4. analysis of quantitative traits in populations of ornamental plants. However, many of the current marker types as e.g., RAPD, AFLP and SSRs have certain limitations in terms of marker reliability, cost per maker and available marker numbers. The development of next generation sequencing technologies now opens up new perspectives for high throughput marker development and for more efficient marker screens in ornamentals. Apart from a general advancement of marker development through the availability of increasing number of sequences high throughput SNP development and reduced representation sequencing are alternative methods for marker development in ornamentals.
