I am working on denitrification in agricultural soils. Denitrification is the reduction of nitrate and nitrite to molecular nitrogen. I focus on the kinetics and the regulation of denitrification. For instance I examine the influence of oxygen on this process which usually occurs under anoxic conditions. As denitrification leads to removal of nitrate on the one hand and the release of the greenhouse gas N₂O on the other hand it is highly interesting from an environmental point of view to disentangle these mechanisms.
